Two teenagers were charged as adults after their street race caused the death of an 81-year-old man in east Charlotte, police said Monday.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police responded at about 9:44 a.m. Sunday morning to the 8900 block of Albermarle Road, and found two damaged cars.

Police said teenagers in a Nissan 350Z and in a Scion were racing when the Nissan struck a Toyota Camry that was making a U-turn. The driver and passenger of the Nissan left the scene with the people in the Scion.

Robert Birch, the 81-year-old man driving the Toyota, later died at the hospital.

The drivers of the Nissan and Scion were charged with felony hit-and-run resulting in death, spontaneous street racing, and driving with no operator’s license, police said. Additional charges were pending with the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.

Police have not released the names of the teenage drivers charged, but said they were charged as adults.
